We are delighted to announce that Year 9 pupils Emma Duffy and Eve Wilson and Year 10 pupil Leia Phenix were crowned the 2020 All Ireland Champions of the Irish Federation of University Women Public Speaking Competition. After successfully winning the Queen’s University heat in February, the girls travelled to University College Dublin to compete against the winners of the heats in Trinity University, University College Dublin and NUI Galway. The girls were given an unseen topic and had to write a 2-3 minute speech that captivated the audience. Leia spoke passionately on the issue of health, arguing that “Granny knows best about good food”, Emma defended sport, speaking on how “Competitive sport can teach us about life” and finally Eve discussed Education, pondering “Is school really necessary?” With such fierce competition, the adjudicators commended the girls for their use of language, expression and humour. This achievement is even more special as Rathmore are already the reigning champions. Thank you to all of our supporters who travelled to Dublin to cheer on the team. Well done girls!
