Year 11 Food and Nutrition students enjoyed a visit to Draynes' Farm in Lisburn. Attractively attired in white coats, blue hair nets and shoe covers the students toured the milk processing plant learning about pasteurisation, homogenisation, bottling and storage. Following a very popular sampling of their famous ice cream the pupils explored the farm where they saw new-born calves in their tiny ‘hotels’, the cattle being fed on silage and the modern robot milking system in action. Chris Wright was a fantastic guide who gave us a useful insight into the pressures of this type of intensive farming and food processing. Our pupils are now well equipped to apply this experience to their GCSE Food and Nutrition course.
