Two groups of Year 13 students from Rathmore competed in the regional heat of the Schools Geology Challenge on 30th January. The competition heat was organised by the Northern Ireland Regional Group of the Geological Society of London (GSL) and hosted at Rathmore. The students were tasked with creating a poster and delivering a short presentation on the theme ‘critical geological resources’. Rathmore geography students gave excellent presentations on minerals and water shortages.
Congratulations to all those who took part with the two teams being placed 1st and 2nd. The winning team will go on to represent Northern Ireland during the competition finals at GSL headquarters in Burlington House in London on 22nd March.
The members of the winning team were Ellen Cunningham, Christie Hamilton, Megan Lundy, Catriona McCoy and Pearse Smith.
The runners up were Matthew Donaghy, Anthony Gallagher, Thomas McCarney, Anna McGurran, Ellen Murphy and Eilis Turley.
