Our Year 8 STEM club continued recently with pupils enjoying a practical based activity in Technology and Design. Pupils used a number of marking out and manufacturing techniques to produce a mobile phone holder, complete with functional circuit that illuminates when a call or text is received. Building upon techniques and skills learned in class pupils used try squares and steel rules to accurately mark out their sapele base before using the pillar drill to create a cavity for a small circuit to be hidden. Using a laser cutter to produce a design in acrylic, the various parts of the supporting piece were glued using tensol cement, before assembling the various parts and testing. This was a great opportunity to develop understanding of CAD/CAM and workshop practices which was enjoyed by all.
