Public Speaking Competition Success

On Wednesday 16th November, six Lower Sixth girls braved the wet and miserable weather to go to Hillsborough to compete in the Area Competition of the Soroptimist International Public Speaking Award. After weeks of preparation (and numerous drafts and rewrites) Nadine McGarry, Niamh Woods, Lauren Dwyer, Christina Sturgeon, Niamh McMahon and myself all nervously took to the stage to deliver our speeches.

The topics ranged from the environment to tuition fees and from the serious to the hilarious. With strong competition from students from other schools, we had no idea how the judges were going to pick a winner. Apprehensively we awaited the prize-giving (I think Miss Mulligan was more excited than we were!) Warm congratulations to Niamh McMahon who was awarded first place and also to Niamh Woods who was runner-up! The whole evening was very entertaining and an experience that we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Niamh McMahon will now compete in the Northern Ireland Final and we all wish her the best of luck. We hope that she will bring back another big trophy to Rathmore!
