Rathmore 3.6 St.Colm’s, Draperstown 3.4
Rathmore clinched the McGreevy Cup for the second time in their history after standing strong against a great finish from St.Colm's Draperstown. Rathmore took an early lead through points from Daire Larkin and Daire Matthews. Plenty of goal chances came but Rathmore couldn’t beat the Draperstown keeper, who pulled off some good saves. Callum Derby eventually broke the defensive rearguard with a scrambled goal. Draperstown replied with 2 frees but the Rathmore defence was standing strong, limiting goal chances.
Draperstown then piled on the pressure in the second half by scoring a quick goal. Derby again replied for Rathmore, but a crazy few minutes saw Draperstown score a goal. The resulting puck out was then caught by Rathmore’s midfielder Daire Matthews who went on a weaving run and rifled the ball into the net. The Draperstown side then won their puck out and went up the field to reply with another goal of their own, to leave 1 between the sides with 8 minutes left on the clock.
The Rathmore boys gave everything they had, throwing their bodies on the line with some great last ditch defending from Donal McKernan, Mark Cunningham and Lorcan Heenan. Half forwards Matthew Hamill and Lorcan Mulvenna put in a great shift and worked themselves into the ground, getting back to help their defence and limiting the space for Draperstown to score.
Draperstown threw everything at Rathmore but a late point from man of the match Daire Matthews sealed a 2 point victory and made it 2 out of 2 for this talented bunch, who last year claimed the O’Mahony Cup as Year 8. This is a fantastic achievement for the boys, of which the school is extremely proud. Tribute must also be paid to Mr Cunningham who has worked tirelessly to get the best out of this team. Congratulations boys!!
