Lego Competition Success

Pupils from 19 schools in Northern Ireland gathered in W5 on 29th November 2011 to take part in FIRST LEGO League (FLL), the world's biggest interactive robotics challenge for young people. The budding scientists designed, built and programmed a winning robot to perform a series of set tasks linked to a research presentation on the theme of 'The Food Factor - Keeping Food Safe'.

The young Northern Ireland talent joined over 200,000 9-16 year olds from over 55 countries to explore this year's topic. Rathmore entered a Year 10 team made up of seven members: Gareth Walsh, Alastair McIlwee, Tiarnan Hart, Ellie McCaffrey, Maria Liddy, Daniel Miskimmon and Paul Stewart. Since the beginning of October the team worked extremely hard, dedicating many hours after school.

The LEGO League was brought to Northern Ireland by a partnership of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Queen's University Belfast - Widening Participation Unit, SAP Research Centre Belfast, Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), University of Ulster and W5. Teams competed in four main areas: Core Values (Teamwork), Presentation, Robot Design and Robot Performance.  Rathmore won Robot Design outright but accumulated enough points in each area to be awarded the overall prize as well!!

As the top team in the Northern Ireland Region, we will now represent the school and region in the UK and Ireland finals at Loughborough University, England. This will take place at the end of January 2012. The team would like to thank SAP for the financial support, and Mr Jonathan Sinclair (SAP) for his help throughout the planning and preparation.
