On Wed 19th Feb the Home Economics Dept hosted a morning of activity for year 10 to give them an insight into the hospitality industry. This comprised of Gavin Cassidy the Head Chef of the prestigious Westville Hotel in Enniskillen who provided a very entertaining interactive demonstration and Loughry College who hosted a ‘Feed Your Mind’ event providing a range of information on the food industry.
Chef Gavin provided us with a veritable feast of dishes including a wild mushroom risotto, and a spicy chicken stir-fry. Some of the year 10 groups got a chance to exhibit their practical skills with a cook off challenge.
Loughry College provided a fun filled programme which gave the students an interesting and informative look at the use of science and technology in the Food Industry. The programme took the pupils through several demonstrations, including new product development, chocolate manufacture, hygiene monitoring, nutrition awareness and waste awareness, which illustrated how various scientific techniques, technologies and consumer issues have a major impact on the food we eat.
Year 10 pupils found these workshops both entertaining and informative, it was a very successful event indeed. Our thanks go to Loughry College and Gavin Cassidy for their time and expertise.
