On Monday 12th December English 2 was a hive of activity with nervous Year 8 pupils and their Sixth Year mentors all eager to prove that their team could cut the ice in a heated debate. The first debate - This House believes that sportspeople and popstars get paid too much! - got off to a fiery start with excellent speeches from both the proposition and the opposition, as well as some intense questioning from the floor.
This was followed by a second debate - This House believes that young people need protecting from violent films, lyrics and video games. The proposition put forward a solid argument and put pressure on the other teams with lots of interesting points. However, the opposition came back with excellent, hard hitting speeches. Awards and certificates were handed out by the Sixth Year mentors to all the participants.
In the end the judging panel, consisting of Mrs Lavery, Matthew Dawson and Jessica McIvor, declared the opposition from the first debate and proposition from the second debate to be the winners. The speakers for these teams were Daire McCartan and Megan McEvoy-Morgan, Conor Martin and Thomas McKeown. There was also a special prize for best speaker that went to Conall Moran for his very well presented speech.
