Sociology Day at Queen’s

On Thursday 9th February, Lower Sixth Sociology students attended a day of lectures at Queen’s University. Speakers included Rob Webb, Chief Examiner for AS and A2 Sociology and Katy Hayward, a Sociology lecturer at Queen’s.

Our day started at 10 a.m. with a quick coffee in the Students’ Union, followed by our opening lecture by Mick Tomlinson, the Head of Social Policy at Queen’s, on the A2 topic of Suicide. This talk was very informative, helpful and interesting, covering a wide range of vital information in a short period of time.

The second lecture was given by Katy Hayward about the study of Sociology at Queen’s University. This lecture highlighted topics that would be covered; experiences from three current students and publications by former students. This was an inspirational talk, which made a degree in Sociology something to seriously consider.

We then had an hour to get lunch in the vicinity and China China and Subway appeared to be the most popular choices! After lunch, we had a third lecture from Paula Devine about a longitudinal study examining the attitudes of 16-year olds to education.

Our fourth and final lecture was from Rob Webb, chief examiner for AS and A2 Sociology. His talk focussed on how to address the AS and A2 examinations.  He gave us useful advice on how to answer and present our essays and how to know clearly what the examiner was looking for. All the talks were extremely informative and useful for the future.

Mid-Term in Berlin

Upper Sixth German pupils have just returned from a mid-term trip to Berlin, which is one of the discussion topics on the A2 German syllabus.  During their stay they had the opportunity to visit many of the sights in this fascinating city with its turbulent history, while at the same time practising their language skills.

They also met up with last year’s assistant, Sengül, who now lives in Berlin and was able to give them an insight into life in the capital city.

Glenveagh / Rathmore Art Project

Monday February 13th was the last day of this very successful project. Over a period of 10 weeks, Rathmore and Glenveagh worked together to produce something “artistic”! Through words, games, activities, discussion and hard work Rathmore and Glenveagh combined all their findings to produce a ceramic panel for each school reflecting the season, personality and signature style of everybody in the groups. We marked the occasion by inviting Glenveagh back for the “handover” of the panel. We were delighted to see all our friends again and it seemed strange not to have work to do together. We had juice and shortbread as usual.

The panel was too big and heavy so Glenveagh will have to come back another day to collect it. Hopefully we will see each other again in the future.

It was a great day to network and sell products in order to raise revenue, and also to check out the competition. Both sets of students enjoyed the experience of meeting with the public, trying out sales techniques and meeting with the Local MLA, Chris Lyttle, and James from the BBC’s Young Apprentice.

Jame's Interview can be viewed on the BBC

The highlight of the day for one of the companies was winning the award for Teamwork. Congratulations to all members of both companies on a successful days trading and investigation. Look out in school and the local press for further evidence of the work of both companies and new products and services they will have on sale in school.
