Aims & Objectives of the History Department

Welcome to the History Department at Rathmore. The study of history at the school aims to harness an understanding of the past and to develop a variety of skills particularly through the use of source material and evidence.

The principal aims of our department are: 
 
-To stimulate enthusiasm for the past as a personal interest 
 
-To promote understanding and knowledge of the past 
 
-To enable pupils to use and to understand the nature of historical evidence 
 
-To develop an understanding of how the past has been represented and interpreted 
 
-To develop an understanding of cause and consequence, continuity and change 
 
-To construct a logical answer to a problem both verbally and in writing 
 
-To draw conclusions and appreciate that these and other historical conclusions are liable to reassessment in the light of new or reinterpreted evidence 
 
-To promote equal learning opportunities for all pupils, building up confidence and maturity so that their true potential can be reached.
