Chemistry Department

Overview & aims of the Chemistry Department:

Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. It is a physical science which is related to the study of various atoms, molecules, crystals and other aggregates of matter, whether in isolation or combination, and which incorporates the concepts of energy and entropy in relation to the spontaneity of chemical processes.

Chemistry is a core element of the Northern Ireland curriculum, whether it is taught as an individual subject or as part of a general science course. It is concerned with materials and the manufacture of new substances and exerts a great influence on our everyday lives, from the food we eat and the clothes we wear to the houses we live in.

The aims of the Rathmore Chemistry Department are:

- to stimulate an interest in Chemistry;
- to provide chemical knowledge and skills;
- to develop knowledge and understanding of patterns and principles and to enable an application of those principles to familiar and unfamiliar situations;
- to develop practical skills, including the use of ICT and the evaluation of experimental results;
- to encourage an appreciation of the part played by Chemistry in the social, economic, environmental and technological fields.
