Biology Department

The aim of our department is to stimulate and excite pupils’ curiosity and their interest in, and knowledge of, phenomena and events of the world around them.  Through their work in the department, pupils are helped to understand major scientific ideas, to appreciate how these develop and contribute to technological change, and to recognise the cultural significance of Biology and its worldwide development.

Biology is the study of living organisms which includes their structure, functioning, origin and evolution, classification, interrelationships and distribution.

Biology can contribute to an understanding of spiritual, moral, ethical, social and cultural issues in areas such as diet and fitness, smoking and health.

The study of Biology can also contribute to an awareness of environmental issues by exploring areas such as the management of ecosystems, pollution and genetic engineering.

The Biology department offers a range of activities which can engage all learners by linking direct practical experience with ideas, developing key skills and encouraging critical and creative thought through developing and evaluating explanations.
