Art Department
Art and Design activities in Rathmore give emphasis to the value of active learning and aim to encourage pupils to think inventively, to develop manipulative skills, to create visual images and to form critical judgements.
The context of the subject – historical, cultural, critical and appreciative – is integrated into the structure of the programme at all levels: KS3, GCSE, AS and A2. Pupils are encouraged to visit museums and art galleries in the local area and the department often undertakes group visits.
In addition to drawing and painting, using and exploring a wide variety of media, materials, techniques and tools, pupils experience working in many art and design disciplines e.g. printmaking, ceramics, modelling constructions, sculpture, fashion and product design, textiles, graphics and related IT activities.
The Art Department has many obvious links with other areas of the curriculum. Stage and set design, thematic events, such as fundraising for local and international charities, visual displays, awareness campaigns, seasonal celebrations and many more - all involve the department in visual presentations.
